GreenWing 'Eatin' It' Tour: Winnipeg SHOW REVIEW

Written by: Justin Fisher

It was very cold on Wednesday night, but that didn't stop people from coming to The Handsome Daughter to see some of Winnipeg's finest new bands, plus a Saskatoon heavy hitter, GreenWing, in support of their brand new album 'Eatin' It.'

Sleeptalker delivered an extraordinary debut performance that kicked off the show with energy and emotion. Their catchy, hardcore-leaning punk resonated deeply with the crowd, who responded with dancing and moshing. The setlist included their debut release, Sleeping With The Lights On, along with a powerful cover of The Weakerthans' Plea From A Cat Named Virtute.

The band also teased their upcoming single, I Never Wanted This, set to drop on Friday, December 6th.

Sleeptalker is for fans of bands like Driveways and Title Fight, Sleeptalker is definitely one to watch as they continue to carve out their place in the scene.

Leon's Getting Larger took the stage next, bringing their signature blend of midwest emo and indie punk to the crowd, in support of their new album You Be Good Now, which is out now. Kicking off their set with the fast-paced single Don't Call Me Jared, sung by guitarist Niko, they immediately set the tone for the night.

Setlist highlights included Antoinette, an older track making a return for the album, along with Seasoned Alive and the album’s emotional closer, Oh The Places You'll Go. The band’s energy and raw emotion connected with the audience, making it clear they’re a force to be reckoned with in the scene.

Next up was Hallfield, a band led by scene veterans Alex Guidry (Elder Abuse, Nice Cops, Camp Robber) and Sebastien Cox (Nice Cops). They came out swinging with their freshly released single Cardboard Coffin, showcasing their eclectic mix of influences that span power pop, punk, alternative country, and emo.

Their setlist covered all of their releases, including the Superfecta EP, recorded with members of Winnipeg’s Locater. Hallfield delivered an emotional and high-energy performance, setting the stage perfectly for the night’s final act. Fans of Locater, Alex Guidry’s various projects, Sit Calm, and the new Mike Froh & The Bad News EP will find plenty to love in Hallfield’s dynamic sound.

The headliner of the night was Saskatoon’s GreenWing, who kept the volume cranked up to 11 throughout their electrifying set. Having opened for heavyweights like Three Days Grace, Mom Jeans., The Dirty Nil, Tiny Moving Parts, and Belvedere, GreenWing has already made a name for themselves on a local scale. With their first stops in Winnipeg and Ontario, they proudly showcased what the Saskatoon music scene has to offer.

Their infectious hard rock riffage and natural ability to play off the crowd’s energy set them apart, demonstrating a skill that’s often hard to master for a headliner, especially during late weeknight shows. Their set included a mix of tracks from their two releases, including the 2024 album Eatin' It. A surprise cover of Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA had the crowd singing along, perfectly complementing the band’s spontaneous stage presence and boundless energy.
